Problem Statement: Develop an innovative, fully operational & immersive lighting system, which will be an integral component of an interior (commercial or residential) or an exhibition space for older adults. Ideas of modularity, parametric design, color & light theory, etc. will be explored.
Objective: To create a foldable lighting which easily operates and has straight forward user experience for older adults, pursuing an universal design.

“Transcend is an expandable lighting that can be used all day everywhere, morning to night. It focuses on the ease of use and straightforward user interactions. It will brighten up when it is unfold, and the user can control the dimness by how much the user closes. Elderly need both bright light during the daytime and dimed night light when they go to bed. Especially, the night light is important due not only the low vision but also because of the lonelyness. Trancend will provide transformable experience that the users can change its shape and brightness to fit every situations.”
Origami tasselation tower was used to fulfill the objective of this project. This method allows paper to become
3-dementional tower when it is unfolded.
Colors were inspired from natural dyes that can give calmness. Colors also have function of dimmer and changing the mood by unforlding one color more than the other.
Application of Transcend is immeasurable. It can be used as ceiling light that comes down like a window blind. This can light up the large space but also can be used as a night light when its pulled up. The small size Trancend can be a portable lighting that can be used everywhere when the user needs light, such as reading lamp.
